Product Specifications

Areas of Use

The Hettich Rotina 420/420R is a compact high-performance benchtop centrifuge developed for industrial environments requiring great flexibility in a single machine. With just one cost-effective rotor, it handles everything from 4 x 600 ml bottles and 140 blood sample tubes to 16 microplates and 52 conical 15 ml tubes — without the need for rotor exchange.

Typical areas of use include:

  • Quality control and sample preparation in the food industry
  • Environmental analyses of water, soil and sediment samples
  • Separation of large sample volumes (up to 4 x 600 ml) in chemical and pharmaceutical production
  • High throughput of microplates (MTP, DWP, PCR) in industrial analytical laboratories
  • Particle separation and sedimentation in materials technology
  • Sample preparation for chemical analyses in industrial R&D departments
  • Separation of emulsions, suspensions and colloids in production environments

The Rotina 420R (with cooling) offers temperature control from -20°C to +40°C with a pre-cooling function, making it ideal for temperature-sensitive industrial processes.

Advantages

The Rotina 420/420R provides industrial operations with a highly versatile benchtop centrifuge that simplifies workflow and reduces the need for multiple machines.

Many solutions — one rotor The unique 4-place swing-out rotor (4784-A) handles everything from large 600 ml bottles to microlitre tubes, blood sample tubes, conical tubes and microplates — without changing the rotor. This saves time, reduces investment costs and simplifies operator training.

Exceptional performance in a compact format With 24,400 RCF and 15,000 RPM, the Rotina 420 delivers centrifugal force on a par with far larger and more expensive centrifuges, all in a compact benchtop format (506 x 650 mm for the standard version).

Exceptionally quiet operation With just 50–51 dB(A), the Rotina 420/420R is one of the quietest centrifuges in its class. This makes it well suited for use in open production facilities and laboratories where noise is a factor.

Available with and without cooling The Rotina 420 for standard applications and the Rotina 420R with integrated cooling from -20°C to +40°C with a pre-cooling function for temperature-sensitive samples.

98 programmable memory positions Store and recall up to 98 centrifugation programmes with 9 individual acceleration and deceleration levels, as well as short-cycle mode for rapid spin-downs.

IVDR-compliant Certified in accordance with EU Regulation 2017/746, qualifying it for use in regulated diagnostic environments.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The Rotina 420 is the standard version without cooling, while the 420R includes integrated cooling with a temperature range from -20°C to +40°C and a pre-cooling function. The 420R is wider (713 mm vs. 506 mm) and heavier (108 kg vs. 75 kg). Both models have identical centrifugation performance with a maximum of 15,000 RPM and 24,400 RCF.

The main rotor (4784-A) is designed to handle an extremely wide range of containers with different adapters: from 600 ml bottles down to microlitre tubes, including microplates, conical tubes and blood sample tubes. There is no need to invest in and switch between multiple rotors for different tasks — everything is done with one and the same rotor.

With the main rotor (4784-A): up to 4 x 600 ml bottles, 140 small sample tubes, 16 microplates, or 52 x 15 ml conical tubes. With the fixed-angle rotors: up to 4 x 250 ml (4795), 6 x 94 ml (4794), or 30 x 2 ml microlitre tubes (4790-A) at full 24,400 RCF.

With 50–51 dB(A) (fixed-angle rotor 4790-A), it is one of the quietest centrifuges in its performance class. By comparison, 50 dB(A) is equivalent to the noise level of a quiet office. Even with the swing-out rotors, the noise level is only 56–58 dB(A).

The Rotina 420 is more compact and lighter (75 kg vs. 101 kg), has fewer rotors (5 vs. 8), and lacks the ASTM/Babcock specialist rotor. In return, it features the unique “one rotor for everything” solution that makes it simpler to operate. Both share the same maximum RCF (24,400) and speed (15,000 RPM). Choose the Rotina 420 for versatile use with straightforward operation, and the Rotanta 460 if you require ASTM/Babcock analyses or larger capacity (4 x 1,000 ml).

Yes. The centrifuge is IVDR-compliant in accordance with EU Regulation 2017/746, making it approved for use in diagnostic and regulated industrial environments.
